Review

I run an xTool D1 Pro 20W in my shop for custom signage and leatherwork, and it’s a reliable diode cutter. The 20 W quad-diode head slices through 6 mm plywood and 8 mm black acrylic in one pass, while engraving speed stays crisp on anodized aluminum and glass when I slap on the rotary roller. xTool Creative Space and LightBurn both work well; I lean on LightBurn for more advanced layer control. The metal frame stays square, belts haven’t stretched after a year, and the new air-assist keeps char minimal. I topped it with xTool’s enclosure and fume extraction—you’ll want ventilation in any indoor setup. For makers who want a capable diode engraver without jumping to CO₂, the D1 Pro remains my pick.

✓ Pros

  • 20 W diode head cuts 6 mm plywood in a single pass
  • Compatible with xTool Creative Space and LightBurn
  • Rigid metal frame keeps alignment over time
  • Optional accessories (air assist, rotary, enclosure) expand capability

✗ Cons

  • Requires good ventilation or an enclosure
  • Diode lasers still struggle with clear acrylic and some metals
