Review

The 980 PRO may not be Samsung’s newest drive anymore, but at today’s prices it’s the sweet spot for PCIe 4.0 builds. I’m running the 2 TB model as the primary drive in my workstation; sequential reads still hit 6.9 GB/s and writes hover around 5 GB/s, while random I/O keeps VS Code, Docker, and large Unreal projects feeling snappy. Samsung Magician’s latest release adds firmware updates, thermal monitoring, and full-drive benchmarks, so keeping an eye on wear is easy. I paired the drive with a motherboard heatsink and temps stay in the mid-50s during long compile sessions. If you need the absolute fastest numbers, the 990 PRO or PCIe 5.0 drives edge it out, but for reliable performance, great tooling, and a mature firmware stack, the 980 PRO remains a fantastic value.

✓ Pros

  • Fast PCIe 4.0 performance still rivals newer drives
  • Samsung Magician simplifies firmware updates and monitoring
  • Excellent endurance and thermal behavior with basic heatsinks
  • Price-to-performance has improved as newer models launched

✗ Cons

  • Needs a PCIe 4.0 slot to stretch its legs
  • PCIe 5.0 drives now exist if you need absolute peak speeds
